On Thursday last week, we visited his dentist and pediatric ophthalmologist. Our first stop was at the dentist which went well, for the most part. The dentist is in Lincoln Park in Chicago and parking is a nightmare. However, this time we found a spot right behind the office which never happens. The dentist was very happy with Leo and how he positions his tongue with the infant trainer. The manufacturer of the device wants Leo to be part of a study so this summer they are coming from Australia to see how the device has helped Leo. Hopefully they take the device and make it available for more kids with this type of need.
The frustrating part of the dentist visit was when we asked for a second infant trainer in case we would misplace the one we have, which happens from time to time. The dentist said sure, no problem and then proceeded to trim the device to fit Leo. We really didn't want to trim it because Leo will eventually need it in a larger size. No big deal until we started to leave and the receptionist told us our bill for the second device. We even had her go back to ask the dentist to make sure we had to pay for it. Not a cheap device either so we were a little ticked we had to pay a lot for something we were'nt expecting to.
Leo's eye doctor visit went well. We actually arrived an hour early but they got us in. Leo also got to see a cornea specialist that specializes in part of the eye that Leo is having trouble with. Both agreed with the surgery as an appropriate measure to help with his issues. Overall, not a bad trip considering we left the house at 8am and was home by 5:30pm.
Leo has a busy week of therapy and appointments this week. Monday he had to go to Peoria in the morning to have blood drawn so more eye drops could be made. Then, Monday evening he had physical therapy at which he did really good. Normally we have speech and physical therapy together for an hour but with our crazy schedule this month, he had an hour of just physical therapy. Today he had speech therapy and did the best that he has ever done. The speech therapist was doing taste tests with baby food by mouth (a very, very small amount) and Leo really got into it. He kept smacking his tongue and licking the spoon, similar to how a cat or dog moves their tongue in and out to drink water. Hey, for Leo this was a big step in the right direction. Wednesday Leo has hearing therapy and on Friday, he has vision therapy and an evaluation for occupational therapy which is a new therapy we hope will help Leo build fine motor skills.
For the big item this week, Leo's surgery, everything is on track. Leo has been healthy, with the help of two antibiotics :) Leo's pediatrician cleared him for surgery so every thing is set. Please pray for Leo that his surgery goes well!
