Before Mr. Leo and definitely before Sammie, Ter and I were travelers. We were probably gone at least 2 weekends a month. One of the main places we headed was down South to Waterloo to see Terry's large family. Unfortunately Leo's extreme medical needs are not very compatible with travel and he literally only leaves the house to go to Dr appointments (well and down the street to the Ory's 3x in the last year). Leo's relatively good health lately convinced us it's time to take the plunge and I'm writing this post from Waterloo! One obstacle to traveling with Leo is ensuring a safe spot for him and all his stuff. We bought a camper at Christmas time and we pulled it the 3 hours down to give Leo his own home away from home. Another challenge we faced was the nurses being upset about not getting their hours if we were gone and then having to stay up all night with Leo when we arrived. Well one of our night nurses started working 1-2 nights a week for another Bloomington trach kid and it has ensured both our night nurses get plenty of ours (and given a fellow sleepy family a little rest). Also our wonderful Uncle Dave made the trip so 3 of us are splitting the nigh shift. I'm sleeping 9-12 and 3-6.
So far the trip is going well. The only bumps in the road have been Sammie not sleeping until the last 20min of the trip (r we there yet?) and Leo puking about 10 min after arrival. If you remember back to fall Leo had a few months of puking during/after car rides. We thought maybe it was car sickness but then it stopped so we kind of forgot about....well he reminded us! Thankfully he has been happy since! Sammie is pumped for an Easter egg hunt with cousins and we are looking forward to catching up with family!
Leo's eyes are healing from surgery. No drastic improvements in the scars on his eyes but also no new issues. We are focusing on hoping the blood serum tears will help the healing. Looking forward to hearing aids next week and surviving without Grandma Helen. She escaped for s much needed visit to uncle Shea's!
Samantha said we couldn't eat anymore of her beautiful eggs as there are only two left; she said we need to save them for next Easter! Tomorrow we are going to gather all the toys in the house that make noise and make little Leo a basketful - let's hope that he can hear them all...G-Ma Helen
