Leo has 3 teeth (one top and two bottom). He is working on a 2nd top tooth. On Sunday he started biting on his tongue. We think he was trying to sooth teething pain by chomping down on his tongue. By the end of the day he had blood tinge drool, a very swollen tongue and sores on the top and bottom. By Tuesday the sores started turning yellow and had a weird odor. We headed to Dr Emm's Wednesday. He said the tongue is not infected, but really mangled. His nurse and I still disagree and think some kind of infection is going on. Dr Emm referred us to a peds dentist to get some kind of mouth gaurd or something to help. We saw him on Thursday and he is located here in Bloomington. He also doesn't think it is infected but described the ulcer as severe. He immediately started talking about pulling out Leo's teeth or filing them down! We said whoa wait a minute...he only has three teeth and he hasn't had a problem for very long....isn't there less extreme options. We suggested mouth guards and maybe sedating him for a few days to let the tongue heal...he said I like the way you think out of the box but didn't seem to think those were too realistic. Really? Those don't seem too far out there? On Friday he called me back and said he consulted several colleagues and they think we should try a steroid cream meant for denture patients and to file his teeth just a little for now. He is going to open his office up special just for us today to try this. Prayers for this to work!! I don't think Leo is intentionally chomping down like earlier in the week but he still bites it because it is swollen. We are pretty sure he can't feel his tongue or there is no way he would be doing this. Moms in my Facebook group said they had trouble with tongue/ lip biting when their kids were little. Good news is they said it improved but bad news they didn't have anyways to really stop it at this age. I included some pics but you may not want to see them :(
In my last post I said Leo had labs run, we got the results back on Tuesday and they were not good. He has pseudomonas, strep and serratia. The doc said they are all common in trac kids but still disappointing. He is on a 7 day antibiotic. I think he was a lot sicker than we were giving him credit for. Since he started the meds he really hasn't had a fever and just seems more alert and happy. We are thinking maybe his body was working so hard on the illnesses it didn't have energy left for tempeture control. We established new germ policies for ourselves and the nurses. We need to make it more like the NICU. None of this b steric is airborne and he doesn't grab things on his own so thus is all stuff someone brought him :(
Monday we are headed downtown Chicago to see an eye specialist. The appointment is supposed to last 3 hours! We are nervous about the long day with him. It is Ter and I's 10 year anniversy that day too. Sammie has been soaking up sun at SF pool, enjoying dance class and hanging out with grandma.
