Today started with an X-ray that showed improvement in Leo's right lung. This prompted further discussions and tests to determine if Leo could come off the ventilator today. Leo has been on the ventilator for almost 10 days now and the decision whether or not to remove the ventilator came down to a 10 minute test. The 10 minute test consisted of Leo breathing on his own without breathing support to see how he reacted. After what felt like an hour, his 10 minute test was up. He did so well that the decision was made to remove ventilator support and his breathing tube. While he still needs a little help with oxygen, Leo is now breathing on his own!!!!!
With the breathing tube out of his mouth, Leo is starting to make sounds. These are the first sounds we have heard out of him since he was born. Kate and I never thought we would look forward to and be excited about hearing him cry. We hope that day comes soon.
Leo's pain medication was also reduced today to make sure he stays awake to breath on his own. He is more awake and alert now but the down side is that he is showing some pain. In an earlier post, Kate posted a pic of his grumpy face. We are seeing a lot of that face right now.
Wow guys. He seems like such a trooper! And I can see where he gets it from. I'm excited to hear about that first cry of protest - and would love to see you two snap to attend to the little warrior.
